Introduction
During his Independence Day speech in 2020, PM Shri Narendra Modi announced the launch of the NDHM (National Digital Health Mission).
The NDHM envisions a national health ID for every Indian, an idea first proposed by the NITI Aayog in 2018, when it recommended a centralized system to regulate the country’s healthcare.
In order to meet the healthcare demands of a country with a population of 138 billion people, the effort intends to deliver efficiency, accessibility, inclusiveness, security, and time and money savings.
This will be a huge exercise. akin to the Aadhaar project. and would require more resources than currently allocated 144 crores, making private participation a necessity given the strained finances of the Centre.
BACKGROUND
The creation of a digital health technology ecosystem was part of the 2017 National Health Policy.
The central government’s think tank, NITI Aayog, is involved in this. National Health Stack (NHS), a consultation on a digital backbone for India’s health system, was launched in June 2018.
The National Digital Health Blueprint was released in July 2019 by a group led by the former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
NDHB recognized the need to establish a specialized organization, called the (NDHM) to facilitate the evolution of the National Digital Health Ecosystem.
The National Digital Health Mission (NDHM) presented its most recent strategic plan on August 7, 2020, explaining the proposed digital registries for doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and insurance firms, as well as digital personal health records and clinical decision systems.

Key points of the National Digital Health Mission
The NDHM is a complete digital health ecosystem. The digital platform will be launched with four key features – health 1D, personal health records, Digi Doctor, and health facility registry.
Every Indian’s health-related information will be stored in the national health ID.
Every patient who wants their medical records to be accessible online must create a unique Health ID with their basic information and mobile or Aadhaar number.
An app and a website will be accessible for the platform.
The Digidoctor will allow doctors to enroll and enter their information. They will also be assigned free digital signatures for writing prescriptions to the patients.
e-pharmacy and telemedicine services will also be introduced in a later stage.
Challenges Of the National Digital Health Mission
Personal information, particularly health information, is delicate, and its privacy must be protected.
There is a risk of exposing individual healthcare data to hacking and commercial misuse because the mission requires government coordination with hospitals in both the public and private sectors, laboratories, insurance firms, pharmacies, and telemedicine.
We now have the technological means to make this possible. We may use Blockchain technology to ensure that any data created is secured and unchangeable.

India is large. growing country and its health care needs are immense.
Advanced health care expertise is concentrated in large cities whereas a large population with health care needs is geographically distant from such expertise and facilities.

If the patient cannot reach the right doctor or the right facilities, the doctor can reach the patient through telemedicine, and test results can be communicated electronically with speed.
Digitization of health care in India in the future that we must embrace, with speed and with care.
This mission will make the healthcare sector more efficient, accessible, and robust.
