Macbeth: Act 3, Scene 5 Full Summary | Macbeth: Act 3, Scene 5 Summary

Thunder sounds as the three witches meet Hecate. The First Witch calls out to Hecate, “You look angerly [angry].”

Hecate asks First Witch, “Have I not reason..?” (don’t have a reason to be angry?) Hecate says the witches were disrespectful.

Hecate says they did not have her permission to talk to Macbeth and tell him “riddles and affairs of death.” (Hecate is saying that she is angry because the witches told Macbeth what would happen in the future.)

Hecate adds, “And I, the mistress of your charms The close contriver of all harms, Was never called to bear my part, Or show the glory of our art?”

(Hecate is mad because the witches had not let her do anything to Macbeth even though she is the goddess of witchcraft, the Queen of the Witches, the one in control of all of their magic, and the person in control of hurting those she chooses to hurt. She is the most powerful and talented witch, so why had the three witches not let her show her power?)

Hecate tells the three witches that the worst thing is that they have helped Macbeth, a mean man who doesn’t love them; he only cares about getting everything he wants.

Hecate tells the witches that they can make her happy if they will go to the “pit of Acheron” (a cave leading to a river in hell) to meet her the next morning.

Hecate says Macbeth will be there to learn what his future will be. Hecate tells the witches to bring their pots, magical words, magical objects, and all of the things they will need for their magic.

Hecate says, “I am for the air.” (She is about to fly away.) she says she will spend the night preparing a bad and deadly end. She says she will do a lot of work before noon.

Hecate tells the witches, “Upon the corner of the moon There hangs a vaporous drop profound; I’ll catch it ere it comes to the ground: And that distill’d by magic sleights raise such artificial sprites As by the strength of their illusion Shall draw him on to his confusion.”

Note: Hecate is saying that she will take a drop from the corner of the moon and use her magic to call up magical spirits to trick Macbeth with illusions (false images).

Hecate says that after she uses her magic on Macbeth, he will not believe that fate controls his life. He will not be afraid of death and he will believe in his hopes more than his wisdom, his grace (abilities), and his fear.

Hecate tells the witches that they know that the greatest enemy of people is the security (overconfidence). Hecate hears her little spirit which has been waiting for her calling to her from a cloud. “Come away, come away.” Hecate leaves.

The first Witch tells the others to come and to hurry because Hecate will returns soon. The witches leave.
