Romeo and Juliet Act 4, Scene 4 Full Summary| Romeo and Juliet Act 4, Scene 4 Summary

Lady Capulet tells the Nurse to stop what she is doing. She gives the Nurse some keys to unlock the spice cabinet and tells her to get some more spices. The Nurse says workers in the pastry kitchen are waiting for her to bring them some dates and quinces for pies.

Lord Capulet comes in. He is in a good mood. He tells everyone to hurry up. It is three o’clock in the morning. It will soon be dawn and Paris will arrive.

Capulet calls the Nurse by her first name – Angelica and tells her to go and get “baked meats” (pies and pastries) no matter how much they cost.

Angelica, the Nurse, is also in a good mood. She calls Capulet a “cot-quean” (housewife) and tells him to go to bed. She says he needs some rest or he will be sick at the wedding.

Lord Capulet says he does not need to go to bed. He has stayed up all night many times before and he has never become sick. Lady Capulet says he has stayed up many times before because he had been interested in spending time with women, but she will “watch” him now to keep him from “watching” other women.

After the Nurse and Lady Capulet leave, Capulet laughingly calls his wife a “jealous hood” (a jealous wife.) Then serving men come in. Capulet asks the first serving-man what he has. The serving-man says he doesn’t know exactly, but it is something for the cook.

After Capulet tells the first serving-man to hurry to the c0ok, he turns to the second serving-man. Capulet tells the man his logs are not dry enough. Capulet says the serving-man should talk to Peter to learn where to get drier logs.

The second serving man says his own head is smart enough to find the logs; he does not need to ask Peter. After the serving-man with the logs leaves, Capulet says the man had spoken well – he had a head for logs – he was a loggerhead (a stupid person).

Then Capulet hears music from outside. He yells for the Nurse to go wake up Juliet to tell her that her bridegroom, Paris, has come. He tells the Nurse to get Juliet dressed. Capulet goes outside to talk to Paris.
