At a park near King Macbeth’s palace, as night approaches, Macbeth’s two hired murderers are meeting with an unexpected third murderer.

First Murderer asks Third Murderer who had sent him. The third Murderer says, “Macbeth.” The second Murderer tells First Murderer that they can trust the Third Murderer because he has told them the exact orders Macbeth had told them.

First Murderer tells Third Murderer he can stay. First Murderer says the last “streaks of the day” are acting as a “spur” to hurry late travelers to inns. He says their “subject” (Banquo, their intended victim) must be nearly here. The third Murderer says, “Hark, I hear horses.”

The murderers hear Banquo asking for more light. The third Murderer says it must be Banquo because the other expected guests are already in the “court” (in the palace).

First Murderer says he hears Banquo’s horses moving around. The third Murderer says everybody walks from here to the palace gate even though it is almost a mile away.

The second Murderer sees a light moving towards them and says, “A light, a light!” The third Murderer says, “Tis he.” First Murderer tells the others to get ready to attack.

Banquo walks forward with his son Fleance. Banquo says, “It will be rain tonight.” First Murderer hears Banquo’s words and says, “Let it come down.” He and the other murderers attack.

Banquo yells to his son, “O, treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly!” Banquo is telling his son they have been betrayed. He is telling Fleance to run away.

Banquo yells to Fleance to tell him that he may be able to get revenge someday. Banquo dies. The third Murderer asks who put out the light. First Murderer asks if putting out the light wasn’t a good idea.

The second Murderer says they failed to complete the most important part of their job. First Murderer says they need to go and tell Macbeth how much of the job they completed.
