After defeating Daniil Medvedev's attempt to defend his US Open championship

And maintaining his top-ranked position, Nick Kyrgios sat in the locker room at Arthur Ashe Stadium feeling a sense of satisfaction and relief.

Pride at the powerful serving and reliable returning that helped Kyrgios defeat Medvedev on Sunday night 7-6 (11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. 

During his journey to his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, Kyrgios advanced to his first quarterfinal at 

Flushing Meadows with the latest in a string of career-changing results.

He expressed pride in getting himself out of "some pretty terrible situations,

mentally" as well as "some really scary areas" off the court, which he initially disclosed in February. 

He continued with pride at having been able to break free from "feeling so depressed all the time, so feeling sorry for myself."
