American Frances Tiafoe Defeat Rafael Nadal At U.S. Open

Rafael Nadal, who has won 22 grand slam titles, was defeated by American Frances Tiafoe

on Monday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York, to lose the US Open.

The Maryland native overcame Nadal 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a competition that lasted more than three hours and thirty minutes.

Since 2006, when Andy Roddick, then 24 years old, reached the final of the US Open, Tiafoe, 24 years old, is the youngest American male to do it.

After the game, he commented, "It was undoubtedly one hell of a performance. "I did a great job today.

Yes, I suppose, I mean, I just went forth with the belief that I could succeed. I've played him a few times, so it helps."

Earlier in the competition, Tiafoe remarked that he was glad to be largely unnoticed.

He expressed gratitude for what his victory over Nadal meant to his parents, who immigrated to the United States from Sierra Leone.
