Even chasing for 700 home runs, Albert Pujols still intends to retire

Albert Pujols is eight home runs away from reaching 700 for his career after hitting two more on Saturday night.

It appeared for a while that Pujols would not achieve the historic number,

but he is currently on a hot streak with six home runs in his previous eight games, putting passing 700 in reach.

Nevertheless, Pujols won't allow that figure affect his decision to retire at the end of the current season.

No matter where he places on the list of all-time home runs, the Cardinals legend informed

Bob Nightengale of USA Today that he still intends to retire after the current season.

Pujols declared, "I'm still going to retire, whether I end up hitting 693, 696, 700, or whatever.

"I don't get sucked into the figures. I would have told you that you're absolutely crazy if you had told me 22 years ago that I would be this close. My professional life is fantastic.
